Coach Bascome in pay dispute with Boulevard

On their way out? Blazers coach Andrew Bascome (right) and his assistant Richard Todd have both been linked with moves elsewhere.

Communications between Andrew Bascome and Boulevard have completely broken down, fuelling speculation the coaching guru could be on his way to Devonshire Cougars.

It is understood the former North Village, Blazers and national team midfielder, who has declined to comment on his coaching future, is currently at odds with Blazers over a pay dispute and has already held informal discussions with Premier Division champions Cougars who are keen to have him rejoin their ranks next season.

"We have repeatedly tried to get in contact with Andrew, but nothing has happened.

"He hasn't returned calls," confirmed Boulevard president Stephen Proctor.

Proctor and his executive are keeping their fingers crossed that Bascome turns up at a special meeting this evening to confirm his whereabouts for next season.

"We have already asked Andrew to attend a special meeting and hopefully he shows up," the former Blazers 'keeper added.

According to sources, Bascome is said to be seriously considering rejoining Cougars – a club he led to the Premier Division and Friendship Trophy double in 2004-05.

He has also submitted an application to have his Under-18 youth team FC Bascome suit up in Bermuda Football Association's First Division next season. Last term saw the former midfield maestro coach Boulevard to their first FA Cup crown in 12 years.

They beat Dandy Town 5-3 in the final at the National Sports Centre and also reached the final of the Dudley Eve but lost against Hornets in a penalty shoot-out at Somerset Cricket Club.

"There's a lot of talk about Andrew leaving Boulevard at the moment and obviously the players are concerned about it," commented Blazers defender Ajani Gibbons last week.

"We would all love Andrew to stay but we will not beg him to remain as coach."

Gibbons added: "He (Bascome) brought us the FA Cup and he's an excellent coach and the team has really come together under him.

"I think Andrew would be making a big mistake leaving us after just one season.

"We are the up and coming team whereas Devonshire Cougars have been established for a while. I think Boulevard would be a more exciting job for Andrew.

"But if he decides to leave, then it would be sad to see him go as we would lose a bit of momentum."

Proctor agreed: "Obviously this could set us back a bit. But we will get to the bottom of it," he said.

"We just need to know as soon as possible what his agenda is so we can start preparing for next season."

Meanwhile, it's believed that Bascome's assistant coach at Blazers, Richard Todd, has been targeted by First Division club St.George's Colts who want him as their head coach for next season.

The former national team assistant coach resides in the East End and last weekend stroked his maiden half-century (65) of the season for St.George's' cricket team.

Bascome will be coaching defending Island Soccer League (ISL) champions The Storm this summer.

His brother David Bascome is the ISL commissioner.
