St. George's 346-8 (50 overs); Southampton Rangers 181 (36.5 overs)St. George's selectors will today be wondering if there is a way they can persuade veterans Dean Minors and Clay Smith to make themselves available for this year's Cup Match following the way the pair tore Southampton's bowlers to shreds at Southampton Oval yesterday.Minors and Smith simply made mincemeat of some very mediocre bowling with each slamming a ton, Minors top scoring with 106 and Smith 101 not out as the East Enders continued to make it a miserable season for the defending champions who slumped to their fifth loss (with just one victory) with this 165-run setback. In this sort of blazing form displayed yesterday, the two veteran bats would look good in the middle of the St. George's line-up in a couple of weeks' time, but with Smith retired from the mid-summer classic and Minors said to have already booked a family vacation abroad during Cup Match that thought is no more than a dream that probably will not come true.Southampton's bowlers were treated with disdain, Minors the more aggressive, slamming 14 fours and six sixes while facing just 57 balls with a more subdued but just as skillful Smith stroking 11 fours and four sixes during his 90-ball stay at the crease. The East Enders were well placed when they joined for a sixth-wicket stand that put on 161 runs. Stability had come after St. George's had lost four wickets for 80 runs when Troy Hall (31) and Smith put on 74 for the fifth wicket. When Hall departed, Minors arrived at the wicket and he and Smith gave the bowlers a roasting with some vicious strokes.Although they were put down twice after reach 50 nobody would argue that they deserved their centuries with several glorious strokes all around the wicket as the bowlers toiled in vain. When it was all over with the departure of Minors, the score was six for 315 and the home side facing a huge challenge to prevent their fifth loss. All of the home side bowlers paid dearly for their sloppiness except player-coach Janeiro Tucker who had respectable figures of three for 50 off 10 overs with two maidens.Opening bowlers Ryan Belboda and Traddie Simpson had no similar luck, Belboda finishing with one for 56 off 10 overs with two maidens and Simpson claiming one for 65 from 10 overs. Young Andrew Raynor was chewed up during his four-over spell taking no wickets for 49 runs.Janeiro Tucker led Rangers in their reply but was unable to find a capable partner to help pull off what seemed to be an improbable win even though the bowling wasn't that penetrating.Tucker seemed capable of stirring up trouble with his controlled innings of 46 until he was caught behind by Minors off Chris Burgess a decision which he showed his displeasure by reacting with a disbelieving, but still respectful, gesture to the umpire.Once Tucker was out there was little hope left for the home side with the score now six for 137 and the recovering coming to an end after they were floundering early at four for 51 and then five for 113.Shannon Raynor stayed and made some resistance with a stand of 26 and Ryan Belboda added 14 but it wasn't long before the East End bowlers snatched the remaining wickets albeit most coming as a result of rash strokes.Machai Simmons took two for six in 1.5 overs, Rudell Pitcher two for 23 in nine overs with a maiden, Clay Darrell two for 32 off 10 overs and a maiden and Ricky Foggo two for 60 off seven overs.
