Asa G. Hilliard, professor of Education at Georgia State University, will speak to students and teachers at separate lectures at the Bermuda College on Tuesday.

Yesterday Premier Jennifer Smith announced at a press conference the lectures organised by the Commission for Unity and Racial Equality.

The lectures will focus on the role that formal education plays in the development and socialisation of children.

Ms Smith said Dr. Hilliard will address the role of educational systems in providing the "knowledge, attitudes, and skills'' needed for students to be effective in a diverse society.

She added: "The Progressive Labour Party government continues its commitment to fostering a society that values all of its citizens through belief in the inherent worth and dignity of all people.'' Ms Smith encouraged all educators to attend, adding: "They are responsible for preparing our young people for a new Bermuda that values all of its people and promotes equality of opportunity for all of its citizens.'' Dr. Hilliard is Fuller E. Gallaway professor of Urban Education, with joint appointments in the Educational Policy, and Educational Psychology and Special Education departments.

He has written hundreds of research reports, articles, and books on testing, African history, and teaching strategies.

Young people are invited to hear Dr. Hilliard speak on the role of black people in world history at the College's North Hall Lecture Theatre from 12.30 to 2 p.m.

At 4.30 p.m. he will address educators on "the Responsiblity of Educators in Teaching the Contribution of Black People in School Systems''.
