'Flu cases expected to keep rising
follow simple steps to help beat infection.
According to the Department of Health, the number of `flu cases reported in December rose and is expected to rise again this month and in February -- the months when it is most common.
Yesterday Bermuda's senior medical officer Dr. Brenda Davidson suggested three ways to prevent the illness.
People "at risk'' to `flu should be vaccinated at the Hamilton Health Centre, on Victoria Street, or by their own doctor over the next few days, she recommended.
"We believe people who have heart or lung problems, asthma, diabetes, sickle cell disease or HIV infection come within the definition of especially at risk,'' said Dr. Davidson.
"We also recommend that people aged over 65 and people who are going to be travelling during this period should consider using the vaccine.'' Anyone in doubt about whether they should be vaccinated should contact their doctor.
To prevent catching the bug, avoid crowded places as the illness is spread through the air or by touch.
People who have `flu should go home and stay there until the illness has run its course. They should also use paper tissues and wash their hands often to avoid spreading the bug.
Dr. Davidson added: "Although we do not yet have final figures, we do know that the number of cases reported to the Department of Health rose in December.
"It is expected to rise again this month and in February, normally the months in which this unpleasant illness is most common.''
