Salmonella scare over frozen seafood
A salmonella scare has forced the recall of frozen seafood sold by an island supermarket, health officials revealed today.
The 250g mix of king prawns, mussels and squid rings, produced for UK supermarket giants Waitrose and sold only by Supermart on Hamilton’s Front Street, was labelled Waitrose & Partners Essential Frozen Seafood Selection.
A health ministry spokeswoman said: “This is a voluntary recall because the product may be contaminated with salmonella, which could cause illness if consumed.”
Salmonella can cause fever, diarrhoea and abdominal cramps.
Suspect packets include those with “best before” dates up to and including the end of January 2022.
The seafood was shipped to Bermuda and sold between September to December 2020.
An additional two cases of the seafood mix arrived in January, but none was sold and they have all been taken off the supermarket’s shelves.
The health ministry spokeswoman said: “If consumers have purchased any of the product indicated...they should return it to the Supermart for a full refund or exchange.”
