prestigious American Zoo and Aquarium Association (AZA).

In making the announcement, Environment Minister Harry Soares said he was more than pleased that the "ever-popular'' local attraction had succeeded in achieving such standards of excellence.

Executive director of the AZA Sydney J. Butler said: "Zoos and aquariums all over North America are continuing to evolve and in turn are enriching the lives of their community.

"The Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo is no exception.'' An excessive accreditation process has been developed for a zoo or aquarium to become a member of the AZA.

The accreditation programme includes an initial application and a two or three-day on-site inspection by a team of zoo and aquarium professionals.

The visiting team observes all aspects of the facility's operation, including keeper training, safety procedures for both animals and humans, educational programmes, veterinary programmes and a financial review.

The team prepares reports which are reviewed by the Accreditation Commission.

After top officials are interviewed by the Commission, a vote is taken and accreditation is either granted, tabled, or denied.

Any facility that is denied may reapply after the concerns of the Commission have been addressed.
