Minors could miss tour opener

Bermuda?s senior national team cricketers will finally get a taste of action out in the middle when they travel to Penal today to take on Division One side Clark Road United at the Wilson Road ground.

At Press time last night national coach Gus Logie had yet to name his starting XI, however, one player who could sit out the 50-over contest is wicketkeeper Dean Minors, one of the squad?s most senior members.

Minors, who recently transferred to Flatt?s, is currently experiencing discomfort adjusting to pads inserted in his shoe to support fallen arches in his right foot.

And should the veteran be omitted from the squad, back up ?keeper Jekon Edness could find himself filling the void behind the stumps.

But it?s the team?s already depleted batting order that stands to suffer the most should Minors be deemed unfit to play today?s opening tour match in the south of rural Trinidad.

The 36-year-old cricketer has been one of the Island?s most consistent batsmen over the past year.

Still, deputising skipper Irving Romaine remained upbeat over the situation yesterday, describing his wicketkeeper?s health condition as ?nothing to be really concerned about?.

?We are definitely looking ahead to the match,? he told . ?This is all about a process and trying to put various things into play.

?The guys who have already been know it?s going to be hot, and some of the new guys get the chance to experience playing in this sort of heat today. It?s like playing Cup Match down here everyday. It is very, very hot.?

And so was the batting of newcomers Treadwell Gibbons Jr, Azeem Pitcher and Stephen Bremar Jr out in the middle at Gilbert Park yesterday.

The trio all appeared comfortable batting on a hard strip, as did middle order bat Hasan Durham later on batting at the indoor facility at the Frank Worrell Development Centre.

?They have all been putting a great effort in and overall I think the guys have settled in very well,? Romaine added.

?The training so far has been very demanding, to say the least, and we have been very busy working on some of the basics in training.?

Bermuda?s bowling attack were also put through their paces, with recall Mackie Crane, Stefan Kelly and Kevin Hurdle pegging the batsmen down bowling a steady line and length.

Bermuda?s opponents are coached by Roland Sampard, facility manager at the Frank Worrell Development Centre.
