A heart-warming story...when all is said and done

Free of Hollywood cheese, I can only start from the end where the poor pathetic accountant, Jamie, finally realises his dream in the indie flick 'Big Shot Caller'. (Spoiler alert.) He finally beats his Nystagmus, a condition that causes his eyes to move rapidly back and forth, to salsa his way to captivating a ballroom.

But it's not one of the "look who can dance" ballrooms. It's actually barely better then the dreary office he sat in for years on end shyly ignoring his colleagues passing by his plain cubicle. Still, as he wings his sister around the room and a smile finally crosses his face for the first time in the movie, you start to feel like life isn't all bad.

Luckily I watched the film in a one floor apartment because the way Jamie walks through life in a daze would have forced me to consider jumping from a higher storey.

In fact many times I wondered during the film why he didn't end his pathetic life.

He was never loved by his dad. His sister left the house when they were young. He continues to drill numbers into a computer all day, while enjoying one beer after work by himself every day of his life. But, just as I was wondering how to turn off the video player rather then my life, he finds a girl you hope is going to turn his life around.

Only she doesn't. Instead it's his brashy, seemingly delinquent sister that finally comes back into the picture when he moves into her apartment. It's her mantra about the 'Big Shot Caller', or God, that she uses to motivate him to action. Even as she struggles with breast cancer it's her tough love and finally frog marching him to a salsa club that finally forces him to face himself. He learns to overcome his handicap and to truly love himself. He even gets a girl's phone number!

So when all is said and done, it's a heart-warming story.

A brother and sister relationship that isn't an overly done overcoming-adversity story that doesn't make your stomach sick.

It makes you uncomfortable because that is what life is. But it also delivers.

OK I'll spill — tears came to my eyes and that never happens for cheese.

Honestly you will walk away and feel accomplished. You truly get an understanding of how he struggles every day and, when he succeeds, and it's such a small success, it's so much more than he's ever had — belief in himself. This will make you love the film.

** Big Shot Caller will be shown today at 9.15 p.m. at Liberty Theatre and again on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Little Theatre.
