"There is a strong possibility that it may not maintain autonomy.'' Mr. Astwood, who helped found WEDCO, now wants talks with Works & Engineering Minister the Hon. Leonard Gibbons.

The move comes amid controversy over the New Year replacement of Mr. Astwood as chairman by accountant Mr. Scott Hunter.

Sources told The Royal Gazette Mr. Astwood was not informed by Mr. Gibbons.

Instead, Mr. Astwood, corporation chairman for more than eight years, learned from a senior WEDCO official.

"I believe it is the first time a Government Minister has not informed someone about an appointment -- let alone a chairman of long standing.

"It has really caused a stink, and seemed a callous thing to do,'' a source said.

Mr. Gibbons was last night off the Island and unavailable for comment.

Yesterday Mr. Astwood, a founding member of the United Bermuda Party, was maintaining a diplomatic silence.

"After 29 years in politics nothing surprises me any more,'' is all he would say.

Mr. Astwood, of Somerset, helped found WEDCO in 1981. He became chairman four years later.

"I have enjoyed myself enormously at the corporation,'' he said.

Under his chairmanship, WEDCO has launched major projects, including the cruise ship terminal.

The West End has also become a major shopping and entertainment venue.

Mr. Astwood said he drew most satisfaction from such jobs-boosting ventures.

These had helped redevelop the area after the Royal Navy pulled out in 1951, taking away 3,000 jobs.

"Over 500 jobs have been created through such things as retail facilities, light industrial units, and boatyards.

"I think that WEDCO have helped rebuild the community.'' Mr. Astwood, Sandys North MP for the UBP between 1972 and 1980, said his concern over the future of WEDCO -- a Government quango -- were based on reports that had come his way.

"I have heard certain things and I want to find out about Government's attitude to WEDCO.'' Mr. Astwood said he was more than happy to step down as chairman.

"I think it is time. I am a builder of companies and ideas. I like to turn a vision into a reality, and I think I have done that.'' WEDCO's ex-chairman -- Mr. J.C. (Kit) Astwood.
