Touching tributes paid to ‘loving and caring’ father who died at 33

Beloved father Jevon Saunders died suddenly on Wednesday. Family and friends have paid tribute to the happy family man who always ‘lit up a room’.

Tributes have been paid to 33-year-old father Jevon Saunders, who friends say “lit a room up like Christmas”, after he died suddenly on Wednesday.Mr Saunders was at his Valley Lane, Somerset home when he was found in an unresponsive state around 11am.He was with his two daughters, aged seven and nine, and his grandmother Beryl Gilbert, at the time.Mrs Gilbert said she was unaware of him suffering from any health complications and believes he died from natural causes.Mr Saunders’ mother Marilyn also died suddenly almost two years ago to the day, at age 56.Long-time friend Tamisha Smith said Mr Saunders’ death came as a complete shock. She said: “I really can’t explain how I feel. I know I just feel like an empty void. Jevon was a very loving and caring person and all those who came in contact with him or knew him, their lives were touched in some sense of the word and he will be greatly missed.“I will miss how straight up he was, how real he was. He was one of the few people that could keep me in check and put me in my place without being defensive or getting an attitude.“He was definitely a great male in my life, a great male role model.”She added: “He lit a room up like Christmas. If you were sad or depressed when he came, instantly your mood was turned around.”Mrs Gilbert said she was out on the balcony with Mr Saunders when he announced he was going inside. Daughters Jekelah and JeTasha went into the house moments later and found him lying on the floor.Mrs Gilbert said she shook him and called out to him while waiting for the emergency response team to arrive, but couldn’t feel a pulse.Paramedics used CPR at the scene and rushed Mr Saunders to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance. They were unable to revive him and he was pronounced dead at 12.03pm.Police say foul play is not suspected and an autopsy is to be carried out in due course.Mrs Gilbert said her grandson worked in a variety of positions at the MarketPlace supermarkets. She recalled him as always happy, very family-oriented and said he enjoyed singing in the Agape Faith church choir. He also had a passion for cooking.“He used to like when I used to cook and I showed him how to make macaroni and cheese and cassava pie. Whenever he was making it he would come and say to me to try some.”Friends and family said he was an extremely talented singer; Ms Smith said he could have had a recording deal.“His voice was a gift from God and that is how he used it. He didn’t use it to benefit himself. He occasionally sang at weddings, but mostly used his gift for singing to benefit people.”He was also a loving and devoted father, she said. “He was very protective of his daughters. He was very open with his children and he didn’t hide anything from them.“He let them know what the real world was about whilst also instilling in them the values of God.”Cousin Melissa Gilbert said the death hadn’t really registered yet. She said she was trying to come to terms with losing “the only person that knew me from in to out”.She said she could talk with Mr Saunders about anything. She remembered that they would sing loudly at all hours of the morning and night together, sometimes waking the neighbours.“He is just full of energy. He lit up the whole room and if you didn’t love him you would have to hate him. There was no in between.”Aunt Cynthia Burns said Mr Saunders was always friendly and joyous. “No matter where I was walking I used to walk mornings he used to come by. I didn’t have to know who it was that was speaking he always sang out. He was always a happy boy.”Joan Simons, an aunt through marriage, said he always made her feel welcome. “He would say ‘you know you’re my favourite aunt’. I knew he was just joshing me but for me, he always made me feel special.“I am not trying to make him seem perfect but around me he was good. He always made me feel like I was part of the family. He was always special to me.”Mr Saunders also leaves behind Latasha, his wife of ten years. The family have not yet made any funeral arrangements and will announce such details at a later stage.
