Smith and Clarke add to Island's medal haul
Shianne Smith boosted Bermuda's medal haul at the Island Games in the Isle of Wight yesterday, winning a silver and a bronze in track and field.The 25-year-old was runner-up in the women's 100 metre hurdles in a time of 15.14 seconds, and finished third in the women's shot putt with a throw of 11m.For Smith, it was her third medal-win at the Island Games having claimed a silver in the 400m in Rhodes, Greece, four years ago.Her team-mate Melissa Clarke also won a silver medal in the women's 400m in a time of 57.94. Victoria Clarke, who is struggling with a hamstring injury, finished sixth in the 100m final in 12.39.Bermuda have now won five medals at the Games and are guaranteed at least one more in the women's singles tennis, with Tyler Smith and Jackie Lambert set to go head-to-head in the –semi-finals.In the men's singles tennis, both Gavin Manders and Naim Ahzer have progressed to the third round. Manders, who had a bye in the first round, beat Tony Kjall of Aland, 6-0. 6-4 in the second round.Azher, who also had a first round bye, defeated Cayman Island's Alexander Leonard 6-1, 6-1 in their second round tie. David Thomas is due to play Isle of Wight's Benjamin Brading in the second round.In volleyball, Bermuda men's team lost a nail-biter to Gotland 106-90 yesterday. The defeat leaves them bottom of their group having lost all three games.It was a better day for the women's volleyball side, though, who beat Hitra and Gotland to set up a semi-final decider against Faroe Islands today.The women's basketball team bounced back from their surprise loss against Guernsey to convincingly beat the Isle of Wight 70-32 to keep their medal hopes alive. Today they will meet Isle of Man in the play-offs.Seventh place Damian Palanyandi leads the Island's team in the men's golf after shooting a 70, while Ebonie Burgess is the top local female having posted a 79 to leave her in sixth position. Elizabeth Parsons is 11th after carding an 85.Micah Franklin and Chris Stout have both moved into the quarter-finals of the squash event, but Mark Haugen bowed out at the last eight stage in badminton after losing to Bror Madson, of Greenland, 21-11, 21-7.Sailor Brett Wright has slipped down the standings of the Laser Standard Rig with two uncharacteristic 15th places, dropping him from first to 5th. Rockel Evans is one place behind in sixth. In the Laser Radial Rig, Jason Saints is holding on to second place and Sara Lane Adderley is fifth.Yesterday, Rhodes' football team were banned for two games and will now miss the 2013 Games in Bermuda after a player assaulted the fourth official.He was banned for life from the Games.
