Black-owned businesses boosted by tourism authority
Black-owned tourism businesses are in the spotlight as part of Black History Month.
The Bermuda Tourism Authority has promoted more than 20 businesses that signed up online as Black-owned.
The businesses and their creators are showcased on the BTA website, as well as on the authority’s social media sites.
The website also includes features on significant figures from Black history in Bermuda.
Glenn Jones, the interim chief executive of the BTA, said that support for Black-owned tourism businesses “must not be merely in words – it must be in actions as well”.
Mr Jones added that the Black heritage content on the BTA website, the increased accessibility to the Black graveyard in St. George, as well as a visit by US author and actor Issa Rae last year and social media work was “strategically important to meeting our ambitious National Tourism Plan goals around Black travel”.
The BTA joined forces in 2018 with travel information experts Mandala Research to attract Black visitors.
The BTA wants to double vacation air visits by Black people by 2025 as part of the National Tourism Plan.
The authority created an online hub, A Guide to Black Culture & Heritage, with the Bermuda Cupcake Company as the first in the series.
