Seven booked as Village scrape through

Village scraped through to the next round of the Friendship Trophy, but should have won by a much greater margin at Devonshire Rec. last night.

Elliott Jennings' 37th minute goal was all Village had to show for a first half they dominated and even though Wolves improved after the break, the solitary strike proved enough.

Referee Anthony Mouchette booked seven players in a frustrating second half in which neither side managed to create many goalscoring chances.

The Wolves defence looked shaky in the first 10 minutes and twice in a minute they went close to conceding.

First Village striker Dwight Warren won a 50-50 challenge with Jamel Warren and ran on to the edge of the penalty area, but his shot with the outside of his left foot was straight at Wolves keeper Hewvonne Brown.

Then Lonairo Simmons' poor backpass sent Kevin Jennings through, but Brown managed to parry away his shot and somehow emerged with the ball after the ensuing goalmouth scramble.

After 15 minutes, Kevin Jennings linked with Warren, before crossing beyond the far post to Neil Robinson, whose fierce volley was well held by Brown.

As Village continued to press, Warren fired over from eight yards after Elliott Jennings had got round the back of the Wolves defence and pulled the ball back from the right.

Just as it seemed that Wolves had weathered the storm, Village finally made the breakthrough.

Midfielder Michael Hansey sparked the move with a glorious crossfield pass played with the outside of his right boot through the square Wolves defence which left Robinson in space on the left wing.

His cross ricocheted off a defender to Elliott Jennings, who smashed a left-footed shot which Brown got a hand to but could not keep out of the net.

Moments later, Jamaul Boyles' pass sent Robinson clear but his snapshot was inches wide of the right-hand post.

Despite having scored five goals against Vasco on Sunday, the Wolves forward line rarely looked capable of scoring against a solid Village defensive rearguard last night.

Their most dangerous moment before the break came after Jared Peniston's cross found its way through to Keemo Smith, whose attempted shot was met with a superb block tackle by Nailon Dill.

Mark Ray tried to fashion an equaliser in the 57th minute with a delightful chipped pass which found Cory Smith in the Village box, but he completely miscued his shot.

Dwight Warren produced the most skilfull moment of the night nine minutes from time when he gracefully skipped past Lonairo Simmons and Jamel Warren, before his shot towards the top corner was palmed away by the diving Brown.
