Habitat seeking skilled builders
Habitat for Humanity is seeking experienced masons, electricians, carpenters, and plumbers to volunteer their time to help with future Habitat projects.
Larry Williams, executive director of Habitat, said: "We have a lot of people who are good spirited and volunteer, but do not have specific skills that we need to build a house in Bermuda."
Habitat for Humanity is also seeking project materials such as cement blocks, cement, sand, and kitchen cabinets for a house they are already working on.
Mr. Williams said: "We have been working on this project for a while. It has three areas for work and we have focused on completing the residential units so that the family has a source of income.
"We also hope to complete the house and update it, but we need help from the community because we cannot financially burden the family anymore."
Mr. Williams hopes that by appealing for experienced workers and project materials, Habitat will be able to serve projects more effectively.
"We have a healthy number of volunteers who want to help overseas and here, but we don't have enough projects for all of them," he said.
"We are a Christian organisation and people come to us for help, but many times a combination of pride and needing permission from the person who owns the house stops a person from asking for help."
Mr. Williams has seen many people come to the organisation and collect all of the papers to request help but then simply do not return the completed papers.
He added: "We don't knock on doors, but I hope people feel as if they can come to the organisation for help."
