With the NatWest Island Games only 100 days away, final preparations are being made for the 14 sports that will be played across the Island.Bermuda will host this years event, which runs from July 13 to the 19, and see 2,000 athletes compete for top honours in their respective competitions.Twenty four Islands have been confirmed including competitors, officials, VIP’s and international journalists that will make the trek."These are exciting times," said Bermuda Games committee member Paul Scope. "The days are stretching nicely, and preparations to many of the local facilities are underway in which locals and the public can look forward to the lasting legacy of the event."Final numbers for the biannual spectacle will be solidified by mid-May, but Scope revealed that the biggest contingents at present will be Bermuda (300), Guernsey (218), Faroe Islands (158), Cayman Islands (145), and Isle of Wight (136).“What is pleasing is that the event will encourage more people into sport, whether that be playing or coaching, and that can only benefit the local community and increase health levels.The 14 sports will be spread across 15 venues Island wide, with the largest competitions being athletics, volleyball, both beach and indoor, swimming and football with more than 1,000 volunteers being involved.The Games are wholly dependent on sponsorship, with the Government of Bermuda, NatWest and many local and international businesses lending a helping hand to sponsor the event.Minister of Community and Cultural Affairs, Wayne Scott, added: "This is a unique opportunity to showcase what Bermuda has to offer not only as a venue for sports but all that our island has to offer from our beautiful scenery to our lovely people and we will de all we can to give you the best Games ever.“Bermuda is very honoured to be hosting the Games and we are looking forward to a week of intense competition, and years of benefit once the Games are over.”Educational packages will also be released to all local schools in an effort to get as many children involved as possible.
