Tropical storm Isaac left Bermuda residents with Haitian links deeply concerned for the embattled country once again.Eight people, including three children, are reported to have died when the storm lashed Haiti over the weekend, and considerable damage was caused.The country is still recovering from a devastating earthquake in 2010, with hundreds of thousands of people still living in tents.King Edward VII Memorial Hospital doctor Tiffany Keenan has been instrumental in setting up a medical clinic in Jacmel on Haiti’s southern peninsula.Yesterday, Dr Keenan was waiting to hear whether the clinic had been affected by the storm. Jacmel was particularly hard hit by Isaac according to the Miami Herald, and was cut off yesterday by rivers and partially collapsed roads.“I'm just waiting to hear from our people in the country about the extent of the damage,” Dr Keenan reported in an e-mail to The Royal Gazette.“As always, we have grave concerns that the damage from this tropical storm will once again slow the progress of the rebuilding efforts in Haiti. The country is now much better prepared for natural disasters as emergency response plans have been put in place by the government and other non governmental organisations post earthquake. I hope that this plans will take full effect post this latest hurricane in Haiti.”Another local resident with his mind on Haiti yesterday was Read Currelly, from Pembroke, whose family moved there 30 years ago. His parents remain there, and suffered damage to their house in the storm.“It has had an impact but it was not as dramatic as it had on the poor people in the tent cities. My parents have a house on top of a mountain and they got 60 mile-per-hour winds and 100 gallons of water in their house but it’s fine,” said Mr Currelly, who travelled to Haiti to help with relief work after the 2010 quake.“I wasn’t worried about my family,” he added. “This (type of weather) always affects those who don’t have anything and where there is no infrastructure.”–Hurricane watches and warnings were in place for Florida and large swathes of the Eastern United States yesterday as Isaac began to hit Florida.The American Airlines flights to and from Miami were cancelled yesterday due to the storm. However, an airport spokesman said this morning’s flight at 8.15am is due to operate as normal and no other delays or cancellations have been reported due to the storm.
