Airport caused delays for Bermuda-bound travellers on Thursday.

Continental Airlines operates two flights to Bermuda from Newark but these were held up by charred wreckage from the crash which littered one of the airport's three runways.

No-one was killed when the Federal Express MD-11 flipped and careened into a ball of flames on the runway early on Thursday, moments after its tires touched down normally, the Associated Press said.

The five people aboard crawled through a cockpit window to safety as the flames closed in.

However the wreckage forced the airport -- one of the busiest in the US -- to close the runway and as of yesterday it had not been moved.

This forced the airport to handle arrivals and departures on two runways instead of three, creating delays for the flights to Bermuda.

However Bermuda International Airport duty officer Arthur Adams said flights were back to normal yesterday.

He could not give details on how long delays were on Thursday and staff at Continental could not be reached for comment on the matter.
