Dame Marjorie Bean, who suffers from diabetes, had her left foot amputated on Monday.
Her cousin Lauretta Bean said Dame Marjorie came through the major surgery "all right''.
Dame Marjorie is well known for her contributions to education and for founding the Bermuda Professional Women's Association.
ASSAULT WITNESS SOUGHT CRM Assault witness sought Police are searching for a woman who may have witnessed an assault on a man.
A Police spokesperson said a man was assaulted in the area of Washington Street South early yesterday morning.
The victim said he was walking on Cedar Avenue, near Victoria Park when he was attacked from behind by three men who had asked him for a cigarette.
A bottle wielding men struck the victim repeatedly on the back of his head and then punched and kicked him all over his upper body when he was on the ground.
The culprits then removed his packet of cigarettes and wallet before walking off.
The man, who suffered soreness to his head, back, shoulder, chest and ribs, was taken to hospital where he was detained.
One of the culprits was described as five-feet, five-inches tall, of stocky build and dark-skinned. The other two were between five-foot nine-inches and six-feet tall and brown-skinned.
It is believed a woman, in a passing car, might have witnessed the assault.

CYCLE THIEF CAUGHT CRM Cycle thief caught Police solved two separate cycle thefts with one routine cycle stop of a Warwick teen last month.
And Shannon Scraders must return to court on August 19 for the reading of a social inquiry report before he is sentenced.
Scraders pleaded guilty to stealing two cycles, riding in a manner dangerous, and riding while impaired.
Senior Magistrate Will Francis heard that Scraders, 17, of St. Mary's Road, was chased by Police at 3.30 a.m. on May 16 after passing them at Crow Lane at 60 or 70 kph.
Crown counsel Lesley Basden said after a high speed chase, he was stopped near the Cabinet Building on Reid Street. Police noted he appeared to be drunk.
The cycle, a $2,000 Honda Scoopy, had been reported stolen by its owner, Lennox Boodram from outside his Random Lane, Warwick, home on May 6.
A Police search at Scraders' parents' home on May 17 and discovered a partially stripped Yamaha V80 cycle.
Jason Butterfield had reported the $1,400 cycle stolen on March 12 from his Peak Lane, Warwick home.
GET A CAT, MAN TOLD CTS Get a cat, man told Allowing his two dogs to stray and allowing both to be unlicensed cost a Paget man $800 in fines in Magistrates' Court.
Roy Correia, 26, of South Road, Paget, pleaded guilty to the three charges which stem from a complaint by the public on March 31.
Crown counsel Lesley Basden said Dog Wardens searched for the dogs in the neighbourhood and went to Correia's home but were unable to catch the dogs.
Further inquiries showed that both dogs were unlicensed.
Senior Magistrate Will Francis fined Correia $500 for allowing the dogs to stray and $150 each for having two unlicensed dogs.
Mr. Francis told Correia: "If you can't keep a dog properly, you may have to get a cat.''
