Student escapes conviction for cursing at police

A college student who cursed at police when he was caught riding an unlicensed and uninsured bike escaped without a conviction today.Officers spotted Christopher Douglas, 21, a business student at Bermuda College, riding a Honda in St David's at 2.50pm on January 6.When Pc Adrian George spoke to him at the Double Dip and informed him of the offences, he became verbally abusive and aggressive.According to prosecutor Takiyah Burgess Douglas shouted: “You guys are c**nts, you are p***ies, and I'm not signing no f***ing ticket.”He also asked: “You arrested any criminals today, what about those boys shooting up the place in the west?”Douglas, from St David's, pleaded guilty at Magistrates' Court to using offensive words in a public place. He told Magistrate Juan Wolffe: “I was taking a bike to my girlfriend. I was under the impression it was already insured; I didn't know it needed to have a sticker on it or anything like that. It was paid two days later.”He told the Magistrate he wants to go overseas to study. When Mr Wolffe commented “you seem like a sensible man,” and inquired why he behaved that way, Douglas replied: “I don't know, it was a mistake.”Mr Wolffe chided: “Now you might have a criminal conviction that prevents you going to school. You're jeopardising your future.”However, he then told Douglas he would give him a conditional discharge, which means he will not have a criminal conviction against his name unless he commits a further offence in the next 12 months.“I think you're a man of promise,” he said. “I think it's a stupid mistake. I hope it won't happen again.”
