Under-17s finish in fourth place
Bermuda 0Puerto Rico 2Bermuda’s girls finished an encouraging fourth place in the Under-17 World Cup qualifying football tournament, losing to Puerto Rico in the third/fourth place match last night.Goals on either side of the break were more than enough to grab the bronze medal for Puerto Rico but the Islanders will return home with their heads held high.“We finished in a credible fourth place and will feel satisfied . . . they have shown improvement over the last tournament for this age group in 2011,” said National Academy director Richard Todd.Previously unbeaten, Bermuda lost to host nation Haiti 4-0 in the semi-finals on Friday night, thus surrendering any hopes of progressing to the regional final. The finalists automatically advanced to the next round of the qualifying.Their run to the semi-finals was an exciting one as they beat the Dominican Republic 3-1 before defeating group favourites Trinidad and Tobago 1-0.Their final group game was a comfortable 2-0 win over Grenada.Bermuda: Micah Pond, Taznae Fubler, K’Shaela Burch-Waldron, Sideya Dill, Nasaj Burgess, Kali Lespere, Zahra Gibbons, Eva Frazzoni, Leah Smith, Dazhja Greaves
