Ponchos, bedazzled T-shirts and other fashion mishaps
Socks with sandals, over-accessorising and indulging in too many sparkles and sequins are all considered fashion mishaps not worth repeating.
The Royal Gazette’s Lifestyle section took to the streets in Hamilton for this week’s Fashion On The Street column to find out from a few stylish people about their biggest fashion disasters.
Sophie Burt, who works in event management, recalls that one of her biggest fashion mistakes was wearing ponchos.
“I don’t think they ever should be worn,” she said. “I remember I had a baby pink one when I was 13, it was so terrible. So I would say ‘no’ to ponchos.”
These days, Ms Burt admits she likes to wear a lot of black and might add some colour with it so she doesn’t look too ‘gothic’.
She said: “I would say my style is basic with trendy accessories. I like wearing necklaces and I’m a big coloured sweater and cardigan person.”
The 22-year-old admitted she will occasionally go onto blogs or search the internet for fashion inspiration. She also has a “small obsession” with the style choices of fashionable sisters, Khloe Kardashian and Kylie Jenner.
Marketing and Communications professional Annabelle Gray counts the bedazzled graphic T-shirt as one of her style ‘no-no’s’.
“They are a little loud. I think simple is best and you can always be a little trendy with an accessory like a necklace or a bag.”
Ms Gray likes to get fashion inspiration through sites like Pinterest and an app called ‘Trendabl’.
When asked to describe her everyday style, she said: “I try to mix neutrals with colours just because I don’t like to be boring.
“I like to add a pop of colour with everything I am wearing. I like to find good deals and then mix it with one nice brand name show or purse. The shoes I’m wearing today are Tory Burch. I also like pieces by Kate Spade.”
Chyone Simons likes to try to take the occasional risk with his fashion choices. However one fashion mistake recently came when he tried to pair some splash work jeans with a top that just didn’t match.
“I sort of thought I could go overboard with mixing up the two things and realised that wouldn’t work,” he said.
For the most part, he tries to dress based on how he feels on that particular day and his personality. “I don’t think about it. I just do it and if I think it works then that’s what I will wear on that day,” he said.
“Being an artist I have this tendency to wear more edgy things. I guess I’m also inspired by a lot of fashion from London. I feel that clothes give you an opportunity to express yourself and not care what people think, just be you.”
