Lightbourne in shop window
surprise first-team appearances.
But the transfer-listed striker was only too happy to take full advantage of 20 minutes on the field as a substitute on Saturday and another 45 minutes last night to put himself in the shop window as he continues his search for a new club.
When Lightbourne replaced Bjarni Gudjonsson during Stoke's 4-1 win against Bristol Rovers on Saturday, it was only his second outing for the Potters this year.
Last week he made an eight-minute appearance during Stoke's 1-0 defeat by Bury.
And last night he played the full second half for the Potters as they went down 2-0 at Millwall.
Lightbourne's powerful header from a corner was superbly saved by Millwall goalkeeper Tony Warner 20 minutes from time and just eight minutes later, the south London side sealed victory with their second goal from Tim Cahill.
Lightbourne was put up for sale three months ago, but a permanent move has failed to materialise despite loan periods at Swindon Town and Cardiff City.
Another opportunity arose on transfer deadline day when First Division Grimsby Town approached Lightbourne, but the proposed deal fell through.
Lightbourne admitted to being puzzled as to the reasons behind his recall to first-team action for Stoke in the past three games after being absent from the side since December 30.
When asked why he had been brought back, he said: "To be honest, I don't know why. It was just the manager's decision.
"But it was good to get a game again. I have to take whatever chances come my way to play.
"I got in a couple of headers and really it was an easy game for them, a comfortable victory.'' With transfer deadline day passed, Lightbourne must now wait until the summer, when he will be out of contract, to find a new employer.
"I am allowed to talk to clubs right now, but people won't be looking for players until the pre-season,'' added Lightbourne.
Grimsby approached Lightbourne just hours before the transfer deadline.
Lightbourne said he had spoken to a representative from the Mariners, but the deal had fallen through for "reasons which were out of my hands''.
