Road closures planned for Cox funeral

Traffic delays are expected in Hamilton this evening as the public viewing for the late Finance Minister Eugene Cox coincides with the International Race Weekend's Front Street Mile.

The viewing will take place at the PLP headquarters on Court Street, Hamilton, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., while the Front Street Mile will be held from 7.30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Previously scheduled road closures will be in effect with sections of Court Street, Ewing Street and Elliott Street (outside Alaska Hall) closed to traffic between 5.30 p.m. and 9.30 p.m.

Traffic will be diverted up Spurling Hill.

Those planning to go to Alaska Hall for the viewing for the late Minister Cox are advised to consider alternate routes and allow for potential traffic delays.

The funeral will be held tomorrow at the Anglican Cathedral in Hamilton at 1 p.m. There will be closed-circuit television in the Cathedral Church Hall for the expected overflow of mourners. Flags should be flown at half-mast tomorrow on Saturday from dusk to dawn.

On Saturday, sections of Court Street, Ewing Street and Elliott Street will be closed between 10 a.m. and 12.15 p.m. for the viewing. Union Street will be closed from 11.30 a.m. until noon.

The parking lot at the back of City Hall will be reserved for specific funeral attendees, and Police will monitor parking.

There will be no parking on Church Street between Burnaby and Court streets tomorrow. Church Street will be closed to traffic between 12.15 p.m. and 1 p.m. for the funeral procession, and again at the end of the service to allow the procession to leave Hamilton.

Traffic delays are expected following the service as the procession leaves Hamilton and travels via South Shore Road to St. James's Church in Somerset, where the late Minister Cox's body will be laid to rest.

Police also advise motorists to use extra caution as traffic is expected to be heavy following the funeral as mourners return to Alaska Hall in Hamilton.

Those attending the burial at St. James will be allowed to park on Somerset Cricket Club field and the West End Primary School field.

Police advise that no parking will be allowed on Scott's Hill Road, Somerset.
