Parfitt-Williams chooses US over Bermuda
West Ham Academy whiz-kid Djair Parfitt-Williams has pledged his international allegiance to the USA rather than play for Bermuda, the country of his birth. The 17-year-old striker, who moved to California when he was eight, is close to receiving his US citizenship and hopes to represent the Stars and Stripes at the international level. He was recommended to West Ham by former Bermuda and West Ham legend Clyde Best, who spotted the promising striker starring for San Jose Earthquakes Academy.Parfitt-Williams said he had already been approached by US national team coaches to play for them at the youth level.“I’m from Bermuda originally before I moved to California when I was eight, then I moved to England,” he said.“When people ask me where I’m from, I tell them California most of the time because if I say Bermuda they start asking loads of questions about where it is.“I want to play for the US soon but I don’t have my citizenship yet. I am a resident there, but to play for the US you have to have your citizenship.“They have been calling me but I’ve had to say ‘no’ because I haven’t had the citizenship, but hopefully I’ll get it in the next few months or something like that.”Despite being just a few months into his full-time scholarship at West Ham, Parfitt-Williams has already made a big impression on the coaching staff with his technical ability and eye for goal.He scored three goals in four appearances for Hammers Under-18s last season while still a schoolboy, and has netted twice in eight appearances so far this season.“At the start of the season, I didn’t start the first game but I have worked hard and produced some good performances so they have put me in the starting line-up and it’s gone well since,” Parfitt-Williams said.“They coaches changed the training and put goals in all the drills to help us all with our finishing. That helped us, because we got five goals against Liverpool, so that was good.“It was definitely a big achievement and everybody was happy, but now we’ve got to do it again.”Hammers Under-18 coach Steve Potts said he was delighted with Parfitt-Williams’ performance in his team’s recent 3-3 draw with Blackburn.“Djair had a brilliant game. His technical ability is fantastic and he showed it by being involved in all three goals. I asked him to do a job and role and I think he did it to the letter.”
