Warehouse blaze

Marsh Lane Fire: A structural fire broke out at the Bermuda Mechanical Building on Saturday afternoon.

A third of the Bermuda Mechanical Supply Company warehouse was destroyed on Saturday afternoon after a blaze which brought four fire appliances, four support vehicles and 30 personnel to the scene. The owner of the business, H. Michael King, who is also the vice president of The Bermuda Press Holdings, the company that owns this newspaper, was away on a family cruise and had closed the Devonshire plumbing supplies operation for the duration of his vacation.A family friend said yesterday that he had telephoned him about the fire. “He seemed calm,” he said. The business owner had wanted to return to Bermuda immediately: “But we talked him out of it. No one is allowed there until they’ve pumped out all the water.”Concerns about toxic smoke meant rescue services personnel warned area residents to stay inside and close their windows, and the public were advised to stay away from the scene.Yesterday evening, police spokesman Robin Simmons said: The smoke is no longer in the area — it has dissipated,” but still encouraged the public to exercise caution in the Marsh Lane area. “He said: “Although there was significant damage reported to the building involved, there were no reported injuries. An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.”
