BAA closing in
the fruit of yet another Commercial Division Group A championship.
The dominant side of the 1990's moved closer to clinching their fifth title in six years after blasting would be spoilers M.R. Onions 5-0 on Saturday.
Three sudden strikes in the first half, all courtesy of Steve Irvine, served early notice to the lowly strugglers, while additional scores by Mick O'Connell and Andy Chiappa after the break completed the rout.
As it stands, Wanderers, with an eight-point lead on second place Island Rangers, will claim the title with a win in any of their last three games.
Anything less than victory by Rangers in their next league game automatically gives BAA a crown to go along with those won in 1992, '93, 94 and '96, Rangers did their part to stay mathematically in the hunt, banishing Devonshire Colts All-Stars 4-2 at Malabar Field.
Blaine Outerbridge netted a hat-trick for the Islanders, while Troy Berkeley added a single goal for the victors. Jeff Richardson netted twice for All-Stars, who remain under threat of relegation.
All but certified for the drop were Forties, as they fell to their 12th defeat of the season, this one 3-2 to Robin Hood. Hood led 2-0 at halftime and increased that to 3-0, on account of goals from Bleary Arnold, Jarlaph McCabe and Nick Snelling.
Forties came back to make it 3-1 midway through the second half through Rob Jones and then, with the last kick of the game, by Brian Fubler, reduced the deficit.
Lobster Pot dominated St. George's All-Stars for 90 minutes at Wellington Oval but came away with a share of the spoils in a 1-1 draw. Bill Spencer scored a fifth minute tally and Pot continued to lay siege upon the All-Stars goal when misfortune struck. In their haste to clear a low cross from All-Stars' attacker Milton Jones, Pot only succeeded in getting the ball to cross their own goal-line, ricocheting off the foot of Mike McGuinness.
The other Group A match saw Mariners triumph 3-0 over Spinning Wheel, with Craig Dixon, Carlos Lopes and Joe Cunha the marksmen.
In Group B, the league title will have to wait only a bit longer before being decided, although leaders North Village Rams made quite a profound statement by destroying Valley 3-0.
Rams exposed the frailties of the second-place club with a convincing display of possession soccer. A double strike by Allan Fray and one from Cal Dill proved more than enough to enhance the Rams' lead to seven points, with another win confirming them for the title.
Stumbling again were one-time leaders Fire Service, who lost 3-2 to Prison Officers at home and falling a place to fourth. Officers scorched their hosts for three first half scores, with Charlie Fox, Mike Lambe and Ed Lightbourne each finding the range.
Service awoke in the second half, but it was too late, as goals from Alan Wilkinson and Brendan Outerbridge were not enough. Taking advantage of the slip were Wolves Pack, who vaulted two places to third after rallying for a 4-3 win over Belco.
Pack arrived with just eight players and paid the price, falling behind early to a pair of Oral Swan strikes. However, with their ranks fortified by a few late arrivals, Pack stormed back in the second half, as Shawn Outerbridge erupted for three goals and Mickey Robinson added a fourth to give them the win. Anthony Dill notched the other Belco goal.
Devonshire Lions remained in the promotion hunt, easing past Somerset Extros 2-0 behind a pair from Ernest McCallum.
The remaining contest saw Bermuda Pest Control held 1-1 by Exiles in a match that featured four penalties. Exiles converted theirs in the first half, Martin Siese placing his to the right side for a 1-0 lead. However, BPC had some difficulty performing their duty, as goalkeeper Russo squandered a pair of kicks, before George Braithwaite tucked away the third for a draw.
