Parks officials believe the object -- found hissing and oozing liquid on Tuesday morning -- is a cannon ball from this century which was probably fired from an old shooting range on Cooper's Island. But Conservation Officer Mr.

David Wingate believes it could be explosive ordnance which may date back to the First World War, while others reckon it may have even been fired from a Spanish galleon. To be on the safe side, Parks officials have advised that no one remove it until Dr. Ed Harris of the Maritime Museum examines it later this week.
