Hit remake takes Magma to next level

Bermudian reggae artist Magma has put a huge feather in his cap after collaborating with iconic reggae singer Half Pint on a remake of the latter’s hit song, ‘Level The Vibes’.

The song is one of several hits that made Half Pint, who performed at last November’s Veterans in Action Show at CedarBridge Academy, popular among reggae fans in the 1980s.

“It’s an honour and a joy to be able to record a song with Half Pint, he’s a legend,” Magma was quoted as saying in the Jamaican Star. “I’m really happy that we were able to work together on this track. Level The Vibes has always been one of my favourite songs, I grew up on that kind of music.”

He added: “Half Pint is my bredrin and we always reason when we are at the studio. Whenever we see each other we always hold a musical vibes. One day he told me that he would like us to record a track together. The next thing I know, we were in ‘Chinna’ Smith’s studio doing a remake of one of Half Pint’s greatest hits. It’s just amazing how Jah makes things possible.”

Level The Vibes is produced by Earl (Chinna) Smith, Donovan Josephs and Adam Mayo for Molten Rock productions. The song is due to be released by Inna De Yard Distribution via iTunes by the end of the month.

Magma, whose real name is Adam Mayho, revealed that a full-scale promotional campaign for the song is currently in the works.

“Right now, my team is busy arranging the promotional campaign for the song,” he explained. “They have already sent it out to the local radio stations. They are currently servicing it to international stations. We are also planning to shoot a music video for the song.”

Magma grew up in Warwick and attended Saltus Grammar School before furthering his education in England which is the birthplace of his father William.

The budding reggae artist began singing during his mid-teens and was influenced by reggae greats such as the late Bob Marley, The Congos and Burning Spear. Magma moved to Jamaica in 2006 in search of more recording opportunities.

Later this month Magma, 35, will perform at the Dennis Brown tribute concert in Kingston, Jamaica.

The concert, to be held on February 23, attracts some of the biggest reggae artists who come out to pay tribute to the late singer-song writer — regarded as the Crown Prince of Reggae.

The late Mr Brown, whose hits include ‘Love and Hate’, ‘Money in My Pocket’ and ‘Revolution’, died in July, 1999 at the age 42 following a bout with illness.

The Dennis Brown tribute concert, held annually along Orange Street in Kingston since 2009, was postponed twice last year due to lack of sponsorship.
