Pre-Cup Match party ‘not just for reggae fans’

What do you get when you invite one of Trinidad’s hottest reggae artists to perform alongside local entertainer Fiyah Marshall? One of the hottest pre-Cup Match parties of the summer, according to organisers.Marlon Asher will headline the Summer Slam 2012 party at Snorkel Park on Friday, starting at 10pm.He first burst onto the music scene in 2004, with his smash hit ‘Ganja Farmer’. These days many of his conscious reggae songs promote spirituality, including ‘Love of Jah’ and ‘Fit and Strong’.Marlon Asher has toured throughout the US, UK and Europe alongside stars like Beenie Man, Sizzla, Maxi Priest and R&B group Boyz II Men.For the first time ever, he will perform his song ‘Heal De Nation’, alongside local dance hall artist Fiyah Marshall.He said: “The fans can expect a full medicinal performance [of] ‘Ganja Farmer’, ‘Love of Jah’ [and] my latest ‘Ganja Cowboy Chick’ out on YouTube. It will be a blessed night.”Partygoers are encouraged to come dressed to impress as the duo will film a live music video for their ‘Heal De Nation’ track.Fiyah Marshall, whose real name is Alex Marshall, will release nine singles on that day; his complete album ‘Blazin’ will be out on August 14. Born and raised in Bermuda, his style is a mix of reggae, hip hop and mainstream undertones.Mr Marshall will be performing a 30-minute set and premiere his music video for ‘Never Stop’, produced by Deville, the top remixer from the group Crooklyn Clan.He said: “We have the best line-up and are calling this the biggest Cup Match pre-party. It’s going to be a real great night, with lots going on and lots of fun surprises. It’s being sponsored by Bacardi and Heineken and will be the first Bacardi Summer Slam.”Other acts heating up the stage include Miami-based group Black Chiney Sound, DJs Supatone Sound, Rusty G and YGS and local artists Tiny T and Malakie, who will be the opening acts for the evening.Hosts include Bermuda’s own Ninja Cutty and ‘La Chica Bahia’ Angie Torres from Tampa/Orlando 96.1FM. The party has been organised by Hot Fiyah Sounds Entertainment and Young Lions.According to a flyer, some of the fun surprises include a mechanical bull, beer drinking contest and booty-shaking competition.Mr Marshall said attendees would be treated to a mix of old school and new school reggae and dance music. “It’s not just for reggae fans, but the college crowd as well,” the entertainer said.Tickets, $40 in advance, $50 at the gate and $75 for VIP, can be bought at Mambo, Choices, Shannons, Rasta Shop on Court Street and Kit n Caboodle.
