Ms Cox made a difference - to the budget deficit

August 29, 2012Dear Sir,Larry Burchall, whose writings about Bermuda’s financial predicament I find most informative, had an excellent article in the Wednesday edition of the Bermuda Sun this week entitled “Harsh truths about our national finances”. In my opinion, it should be required reading for every resident on the island. In the article, Mr Burchall details specifics and compares the management records of Bermuda’s sixth and seventh Ministers of Finance, ie respectively, Mr Eugene Cox and Ms Paula Cox. While Mr Cox ran a “tight ship’ with little to no increase in the Island’s national debt after the PLP won government in 1998, his daughter and Bermuda’s present Finance Minister has presided over a ballooning ten-fold increase in the Island’s debt to approximately $1.5 billion, for which future generations will be responsible. What I found most disturbing came on page 13 of the same Bermuda Sun paper, where the headline read, “Premier Cox recognised as a trailblazer”; ‘chosen for ‘Women Who Make a Difference Award’ by Women’s Forum. All I can say is that she sure has made a difference; indeed, a very large difference for which we will pay for a very long time!ALLAN D MARSHALLSt George’s
