Island’s tribute to John Lennon gathers pace with video channel

A sculpture memorial to Lennon will be unveiled in the Botanical Gardens on June 21.

Organisers of the John Lennon Bermuda Tribute events have launched a YouTube channel now featuring around 30 Bermudians performing the Beatles’ song ‘All You Need is Love.’The music video is part of a lead up to the unveiling of the Double Fantasy sculpture and other tribute events in the Botanical Gardens on June 21. The tribute is intended to commemorate the two months John Lennon spent in Bermuda during the summer of 1980. During that time he wrote songs for his last album, ‘Double Fantasy’ which is named after a flower he saw in the Botanical Gardens.The video, filmed by Lucinda Spurling, features scenes of construction workers, postal workers and beachgoers singing along and dancing to the Beatles tune in addition to performers in the Masterworks Museum. Singers featured include Tourism Minister Wayne Furbert and MP Glenn Blakeney and artists Will Black and Gavin Smith.The Bermuda-produced version of ‘All You Need is Love’ will be one track on a CD of Lennon and Beatles songs performed by Bermudian and Bermuda-affiliated artists. The album will be released along with the sculpture unveiling, a freesia labyrinth in the Botanical Gardens and an art exhibit at the Masterworks Museum.The new sculpture, created by Graham Foster, will be unveiled in the Botanical Gardens on June 21. A concert featuring the music of John Lennon, performed by Bermuda artists and artists with a Bermuda connection, will be held in the Gardens on September 21.Useful website: www.doublefantasybermuda.com
