Scammers hijack of MarketPlace promotion warning

A warning over a staycation promotion by a supermarket chain was today issued by police.

A police spokesman said the offer from supermarket chain MarketPlace, in conjunction with the Hamilton Princess Hotel, had been cloned by fraudsters.

He added the fake sites were designed “to lure unsuspecting individuals into providing personal information by misleading them into believing that they are prize winners”.

Acting Detective Chief Inspector Derricka Burns, said the fake links had links which could infect computers with malware or attempt to steal personal information.

She said: “The fraudsters are using e-mail addresses which are very similar to that of the Market Place – www.marketplace.bm – but with one or two letters being different or, an underscore or extra dot being added.”

Dangerous sites include themarketplaceltd_official, themarketplace.official and themarketplacelts.blogspot.com.
