'The extra work is worth it in the end'

Sandys Secondary Middle School head boy Ethan Rogers

When I first walked through the doors of Sandys Secondary Middle School, I was afraid and confused.

I had never seen a school quite as big. I was fresh out of Dalton E. Tucker Primary School.

The teachers at Sandys immediately tried their best to help us adjust to the changes from primary to middle school. About half way through the year I found that I struggled in some areas, especially in Math.

It took a while, but with tutorials and extra attention, I managed to improve to a satisfactory level.

Furthermore, I found encore (extra-curricular) classes to be very interesting. I never knew that you could take woodwork (Design and Technology) or cooking (Family Studies) in school. I performed well in these classes.

On the second day of my M2 year, I realised that school would be more challenging. My Math teacher helped me keep good grades in his class.

My grades in English/Language Arts were awful. I was at risk of having to attend summer school.

My teacher of English, Dr. Bascome, assisted me a great deal to improve my overall grade. I am still grateful today for his hard work and commitment to my education.

During this time of my middle school experience, I began giving in to the peer pressure of my friends a little and talking in class.

My teachers did an excellent job in helping me straighten things out real soon. I have found that teachers at Sandys Secondary Middle School are extremely helpful.

In the third year of my experience at Sandys things became a little rocky in Language Arts. However, a parent-teacher conference helped sort out problems regarding my work.

In November of 2009 it was announced that prefects and heads would be selected. I was chosen as Head Boy.

With this title comes a lot of responsibility. For example, I am running my school's Haiti Clothes Drive.

The extra work is worth it in the end. All of my grades have been steadily improving. Therefore, I am proud.

I thank all the teachers and administrators for making the last three years the most enjoyable and rewarding of my entire life.
