Smith's South

with the Hon. C.V. (Jim) Woolridge topping the polls and newcomer Mr. Trevor Moniz following close behind.

The strong UBP support there came as no surprise for the pair, who attributed their success to "lots of hard work''.

"It was a good win,'' Mr. Woolridge said. "Trevor worked very hard, harder than I did, because I was away for most of the campaign. My main thing was to get him in, and my message to constituents was to vote for the party.'' Progressive Labour Party candidate Dr. Clark Godwin made a respectable first showing taking slightly more than 16 percent of the vote, while National Liberal Party candidate Graeme Outerbridge slumped to the bottom.

A shocked Mr. Outerbridge, who in 1989 came within 74 votes of being elected, said it was a "dramatic slide'' for him. Last night, he received only 13.5 percent of the vote.

"I was slaughtered, and I was one of the NLP hopefuls,'' he said. "I can't take it personally. There is a lot of fear out there, the uncertain economic situation, and now the uncertainty in Russia. I was extremely depressed coming into the election.'' Mr. Woolridge, who has represented Smith's South for 25 years, increased significantly to 780 from 657 in 1989. Mr. Moniz, who replaced veteran UBP backbencher Mr. Anthony Correia, followed close behind with 690 votes. The PLP's Dr. Godwin, with more than 165 plumps, got a total of 340 votes -- a far better showing than his predecessor Mr. Calvin Wales, who in 1989 got 233 votes. And Mr. Outerbridge, who remained at the bottom of the poll throughout the count, took just 283 votes, down from 426 votes in 1989.

Tourism Minister Mr. Woolridge put his continued success down to staying in touch with the people. "I think I've topped the polls here in every election,'' he said. "I've never gotten out of touch with the people. There are seven churches in this constituency and I try to make my presence felt at all of them.'' Mr. Moniz said for him, it came down to "seeing people one on one''. "It was a lot of hard work and I did my homework.'' And Dr. Godwin said: "I am very pleased to be baptised in this fashion. The people obviously thought I was a quality candidate. I think this sends a message to the UBP and the PLP that I will be taken seriously in spite of my locks and my ideology. I think it's incredible.'' RESULTS C.V. Woolridge (UBP) 780 Trevor Moniz (UBP) 690 Clark Godwin (PLP) 340 Graeme Outerbridge (NLP) 283 Void ballots 2.
