A new learning centre giving young people an innovative way to excel in subjects like reading and maths will be opening its doors in September.Oxford Learning Bermuda will be launching a new programme to coincide with the back-to-school period.The centre provides quality after-school educational support for students of all ages and grade levels, according to director Doyle Butterfield.He said it was the “perfect time” to introduce Oxford Learning to the community given the recent reductions in school budgets.“Most parents recognise that an average education is not sufficient and want to equip their children with the right tools to succeed. Oxford Learning offers such tools.”Oxford Learning was founded in Ontario, Canada, almost three decades ago by a group of educational experts. They developed an interactive programme to help children develop more effective ways of thinking, concentrating, listening and remembering.It has grown to include more than 140 locations worldwide.Each Oxford Learning programme begins with an in-depth assessment of a child’s learning strengths and weaknesses, said Mr Butterfield.This process allows students to be placed in a programme where they can gain academic support in a way that best meets their learning needs.Students work in small groups, aided by a qualified teacher, to develop their proficiency in maths or reading. They also build their self-confidence as they work.Mr Butterfield said: “Confidence is a big part of helping children get better grades. When children start to feel better about their learning abilities they can accomplish anything.“We’re really happy to be bringing these learning opportunities to the Bermuda community.”The centre, located on King Street, in Hamilton, will be having a grand opening celebration at a later stage in September.There will be prizes, games and treats, as well as special deals for the first students to enrol.Mr Butterfield will announce that date in the near future and encourages residents to come down and find out how the centre’s approach can help local students boost their grades.Useful website: www.oxfordlearning.com/Bermuda.
