Free art workshops for all ages
In the immediate aftermath of all the excitement of Christmas and Boxing Day, the days which follow can often feel like a let-down – but not in the eyes of the Masterworks Foundation.
In fact, they see December 27 to 31 as a perfect time to celebrate the visual arts by hosting an 'Arts for All' programme, which includes free art workshops for all ages, and a Family Arts Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on December 27.
Shelly Hamill, artist and Masterworks' current 'Piece of Mind' mosaic instructor, will be on hand to demonstrate the ancient craft of mosaic, and discuss her upcoming exhibition and 2009 workshops.
Peggy Couper will be demonstrating the art of basket weaving, and there will be cedar work by Milton Hill. A selection of original artwork by Bermuda's leading artists will be available for purchase in the Arrowroot Gallery.
The 'Arts for All' free workshops will engage youth in one-hour sessions of creative hands-on fun and museum discovery.
On December 29, students can have a one-hour 'museum detective' session led by Masterworks education coordinator, Carrie Zenti. On December 31, three sessions of a youth 'Caribbean Party' are planned.
Free adult and teen workshops will include sessions instructed by three accomplished local artists and instructors: Frank Dublin (pastel drawing), Vernon Clarke (life drawing), and Manuel Palacio (portraiture demonstration). To reserve a workshop space contact 236-2950, but hurry – space is limited.
"Masterworks is pleased to offer this four-day, free community event, which creates the opportunity for individuals and families to come together and interact in a fun, supported environment," Ms Zenti said.
"It was a pleasure to witness all the action and joy over the years at 'Arts for All'. We see families creating together, visiting with artists, and enjoying the Botanical Gardens. It makes for a great day, and we greatly appreciate the local artists and volunteers who continue to give Masterworks their time and support, particularly over a busy holiday season. So, please bring your visitors, and come see for yourself what a treasure the new art museum truly is."
'Arts for All' is sponsored by American Friends of Masterworks.
Looking ahead to 2009, Masterworks announces that Mr. Palacio will be teaching on staff at Masterworks with a Sunday morning painting class on site in the Botanical Gardens.
In addition, it is currently accepting registrations for its 2009 workshops, which begin on January 3. These will include mosaic sessions for mom and tot to adults, plein air painting, after-school youth sessions, and more. Please telephone 236-2950 or visit www.bermudamasterworks.com for full details.
