Struggling Rangers stun Blazers

Premier Division basement dwellers Ireland Rangers pulled off a surprise 1-0 victory against ten-man Boulevard at Malabar yesterday.

Defender Sheroy Fubler scored midway through the second half against Blazers who had Hakeem Taylor dismissed after he received two yellow cards.

Although Rangers are not mathematically relegated they would need to pull off a Houdini-like escape with Devonshire Colts having a far superior goal difference.

Coach Duane DeRoza said he was delighted with the commitment his team had shown in recent weeks.

"We're still fighting (against relegation) even though our goal difference is far worse than our rivals," he said. "The players have shown a lot of commitment of late and that's why we've been enjoying better results.

"Although we weren't great against Boulevard, we got the victory and that's the main thing. It could have gone either way and it helped that they had a man sent off before we scored."

Boulevard coach John Rebello rested a number of senior player and said he was pleased with the performances of his youngsters.

"No disrespect to Rangers but the result wasn't really important for us," he said. "We started with a lot of young guys and some senior players who haven't seen much action this season.

"Overall it's been a excellent season for us considering what we've been through. We lost a lot of players at the start of the season, including our most inspirational player (Shaki Crockwell).

"People had written us off and thought we would be relegated but the players have shown plenty of character and that's very pleasing."

Meanwhile, Devonshire Cougars were held to a goalless draw against Dandy Town in a 'dead rubber' of a fixture at St.John's Field.
