‘Games a chance for Bermuda to shine’ says Swan

Bermuda ‘should do as good or better’ than the Isle of Wight when the Island Games are held here in two years’ time, according to UBP MP Charlie Swan who has just returned from the current Games being held on the small island off England’s southern coast.“Our size means that access to events will be easier, with many concentrated in and around the National Stadium,” said Swan.“While the Isle of Wight Games have transport issues, these should be lessened in Bermuda we can use the water too!“Our challenge, most felt, will be accommodation.“The Games are held during what, for our hotels, is the high season, so room availability at reasonable rates may pose a problem.”Swan attended this week’s ‘Preview for the 2013’ when a presentation was made by Jon Beard, team manager and chairman of Bermuda’s Island Games committee, and Wayne Carey, permanent secretary for the Sports Ministry.Dignitaries, representatives and attaches from the 24 islands who compete in the bi-ennial Games were briefed on Bermuda’s preparation for the Games, and athletes from the current Bermuda squad manned tables to answer questions.“The Ministry of Youth, Families and Sport displayed plans and schematics of our National Stadium, inlcuding the new pool,” said Swan.“This was an opportunity for island representatives to ask questions concerning travel, accommodation and other aspects of our Games, which will be the 15th.“. . . options for airlift, including pooling resources and chartering airplanes,” were explained. “Additionally, existing accomodation options were discussed.“It goes without saying that Bermuda can, and should, do as good or better a job with our Games.“This preview did highlight one very important fact. All islands take these Games very seriously, and we should too. While our people will not know of many of the participants, most also know little about us!“We have two years to prepare and to welcome them.“Like the Isle of Wight we can all get involved! Collectively we can do it.”
