Sifting plant proposed for site next to Devonshire Marsh
A plant to process material for backfill has been proposed for a property on Marsh Lane in Devonshire.
According to a planning application, Kip Froud of Invisible Trenching Ltd has sought planning permission to run a crushing and sifting plant at #10 Marsh Lane.
The plant is intended to be used to prepare backfill materials for trenching projects.
The application said: “Invisible Trenching Ltd are currently contracted by Belco and the Department of Works and Engineering – Water Section to trench on Harrington Sound Road from Paynter’s Road to the Flatts substation.
“This work is part of a large upgrade project for the existing Belco high voltage transmission system to be done over the next few years.
“Invisible Trenching Ltd have other projects requiring processed material on an as-needed basis.”
The application noted the property is zoned for industrial use and has been used for such in the past.
The company has also obtained approval from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources for the operation of a mechanical sifter, which would be placed in the middle of the site.
The application said: “The proposed berm along the perimeter between the site setback and nature reserve to the east and trenches along the north, east and south are all measures to ensure that storm water from the site will be disposed of within the curtilage of the site without risk of conveyance to the Nature Reserve, roadway or other private property.
“As per The Draft Bermuda Plan 2018, the minimum setback of 20 feet from the lot line shared with the nature reserve, will be maintained.
“Proposed containers will help screen the plant and ensure that the driveway and work areas are well defined and kept away from the setback.”
The Bermuda National Trust has previously called for a freeze on industrial development at Devonshire Marsh to protect the wetlands, which are an important refuge for birds and plants.
A BNT spokesman said this week they were aware of the application, but would not comment on the subject until after they have looked into it.
