Ten ships will anchor off the Island, at Five Fathom Hole, led by the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga .

It is the normal practice of the US Navy to end their tours off Bermuda where male members of their families are flown out to meet them. After a short stay off the Island they all sail home together.

If the weather is unsuitable seven ships will proceed to Murray's Anchorage while the other three remain offshore.

The Saratoga is a 1,071-foot, 59,060-ton Forestal Class carrier, launched in October, 1955. She carries around 80 planes and six helicopters, with a crew of 2,896, including 136 officers.

Travelling at a speed of 20 knots the carrier's range is 8,000 miles, but its top speed is 33 knots.

Jane's Fighting Ships says: "The Forrestal class ships were the first aircraft carriers designed and built specifically to operate jet propelled aircraft.'' The Saratoga incorporates the British-designed angled flight deck and steam catapult. It will arrive in Bermuda with the combat support ship USS Detroit which provides rapid replacement of petroleum, munitions, provisions and freight at sea.

Also in the party are the guided missile cruisers USS Biddle , Thomas Gates and Phillipine Sea , destroyer USS Comte de Grasse , guided missile frigates USS Stephen W. Groves, John L. Hall and Jack Williams and destroyer tender USS Yellowstone.

The total number of crew in the whole task force exceeds 5,000. Their tour is believed to have included the Mediterranean and the Persian Gulf.
