The system, the Global Oceanographic Observing System, was launched by Bermuda Biological Station for Research director, Dr. Tony Knap.

Dr. Knap was addressing delegates at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, entitled "Rallying All Forces for Global Recovery''.

He is part of a 14-man delegation from the Island, led by Premier the Hon.

John Swan.

One aim of the delegation is to establish Bermuda, via the Bio Station, as a seat of expertise on the environment.

Dr. Knap was a featured speaker at the prestigious conference where financial and political leaders from all over the world were meeting.

In presenting a broad update on the global environment, Dr. Knap said the new world weather watch system, GOOS, will improve the ability to collect environmental data.

It will consist of satellites, deep sea moorings and automated remote submarines which make it possible to predict changes in the ocean environment.

The news system will cost approximately $4 billion to operate and will revolutionise information on atmospheric systems and climate change.

Dr. Knap was also scheduled to make another presentation on oil spills, using a number of case studies to explain the history of clean-ups and the short and long term implications. He was also asking the question: "Does the cost really justify the media sensation?'' The Bermuda delegation used the forum as an opportunity to meet 150 chief executives, international media and current clients of Bermuda industry.

They held a Bermuda Contact reception which was attended by Subruto, the general secretary of OPEC, the world's oil producers.

Invitations went out to the USA, the UK, Canada, Japan, France, Thailand, Germany, Switzerland, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Austria, Sweden, Qatar, Australia and Luxembourg.
