Field trips are always eagerly anticipated

Responsible recycling: Venese Gordon explains the material recovery and recycling process at the facility in Hamilton Parish.

The school went on a number of trips which were the highlight of some students' year.

During October we went to the recycling centre (the M.E.R.F. facility), Emma Woolgar reported.

It was part of our prize for winning the "Aluminum Can Recycling Week", for the private school primary and middle school division. When we got there we saw a BIG blue and yellow machine. We later found out that it was used to help sort out the recyclables. We walked up some steps and our tour guide, Mrs. Gordon, showed us the bag ripper. Then we walked into a different room. We met the "invisible man" that made sure there was nothing that wasn't recyclable that went into the sorter. We went there next. There was a magnet that picked up the tin, an air blower that blew the aluminum, and a big grinder that ground up the glass. We got off the machine and she told us what E-waste was. It's anything that's electronic. Outside there was a mountain of glass and aluminum cubes. I learned a lot about recycling and had a great time. Remember: reduce, reuse, and recycle!

For Tyanna Webb the highlight of the school year was when all rode the ferry to Dockyard. When we got there we went straight to the Clayworks. We had to paint a tile and a bowl. While we were painting we got to try a Segway. It was fun. Then we went and got some ice cream and went back to the ferry. When we got back, some people left from there and some people went back to school. We got to leave early.

Ryan Hopkins recalled vividly in October we went to the Police Week display. We saw an explosion and the SWAT team with machine guns and grenades, a dog attacking a man, and a dog finding drugs. I especially liked it when the cops' chase went on and they disarmed the man in the other car.

Creations in clay: Students Tyanna Webb, Emma Woolgar, Dylan Holshouser, Kristian Tuckett, and Damien Martins painted bowls while visiting Bermuda Clayworks during the school year.
