Screaming fans gathered in Washington Mall for a chance to see dance hall artist Shabba Ranks and soca queen Alison Hinds.The pair, who are in Bermuda for a concert at Tiger Bay tonight, signed autographs and broke into spontaneous song much to the delight of spectators in Washington Mall yesterday.Meanwhile veteran Beres Hammond, also scheduled to perform tonight — at Par-la-Ville Park — had a more low key afternoon.The reggae legend spent an hour or so with Community Affairs Minister Wayne Scott at the Somerset office of local promoters Vibe 103.Mr Scott handed the reggae legend a gift.Mr Hammond has been to the Island about six times and chose tonight’s concert to debut his “One Life, One Love” North American tour which will see him perform in Boston, New York, Miami, Philadelphia, Chicago, San Diego, Los Angeles, Toronto and Vancouver.The reggae great was last in Bermuda in 2008 when he performed at the Culture Shock “Sweetness is my Weakness” concert at Somerset Cricket Club.He wouldn’t reveal too much about tonight’s show when The Royal Gazette caught up with him yesterday afternoon.“When people ask me I usually tell them if I tell you, you don’t need to come to the show,” he said. “I think I’m still right. When you go to the show you’re supposed to be anticipating every move.“But one thing I can tell you one thing for sure — it always promises to be good and it will be good.”Mr Hammond, like Shabba, has thousands of fans in Bermuda.But the venue for one of his first overseas shows, the Island is like a second home for him.“I have made a lot of friends in Bermuda but I prefer to call them family,” he told The Royal Gazette earlier this month.Hammond’s show will feature local opening acts, Uzimon, Troy Anthony and Collie Buddz.Said Shabba of the Washington Mall turnout: “The youth are my energy, the youth are where I get my energy from.”With tomorrow night’s concert scheduled for the eve of Cup Match, he bragged about his own cricket skills: “I know how to swing a bat. Yeah, I know how to get a six or a four.”Asked to describe his music, Shabba said: “My music is sexy music; my music is revolutionary music. ”
