The Bermuda Four-Ball Championships seem to bring the very best out of Katrin Burnie and playing partner Linda Down.

The pair have won the ladies title at the annual 36-hole best-ball championships for the past three years and, based on their solid display en route to victory at last weekend’s event at Port Royal Golf Course, are showing absolutely no signs of letting up any time soon.

So what has been the key to success?

“We are good friends and I think you always want to do good for your friend,” Burnie said.

“When it’s only you, it’s different. But you really try harder because you really want to do well for your partner.”

Down added: “We also have a very similar game, which always helps, so we can help each other out with distance.”

The pair captured their third straight ladies title at the recent Bermuda Four-Ball Championships by three shots over nearest rivals Cindy Ratziaff and Elizabeth Carpio.

The two-times defending champions held a share of the 18-hole lead with Ann Symonds and Tracy Burgess and, with no margin to spare playing in blustery conditions, proved equal to the task during Sunday’s final round at the par-71 Southampton layout.

“This is just our third time playing together and our third win,” Burnie said.

When asked was last weekend’s feat more special than any of their other victories, Down replied: “They are all special.”

The pair’s task was made all the more daunting as they battled through the pain barrier having yet fully recovered from foot and shoulder injuries.

“I had a broken foot,” Burnie revealed.

“I hadn’t played 18 holes since November. I’ve played a few 9 holes, but not 18 holes.

“My foot is a little swollen, but it was worth it.”

Down added: “I have a shoulder injury, so it’s all good.

“When you’re on the golf course it’s funny, you just work through it. You push the pain aside and you do what you got to do.”

Fraser Hunt and Teddy Terceira won the men’s title at last weekend’s championships at Port Royal while David Pickering and Gary Carr won the senior men’s division respectively.
