East win All-Star battle: Skipper Smith's early strike sets up comfortable

East 3 West 1 The East clinched their second win in the third Coca Cola All-Star Classic at Somerset yesterday when goals from captain Nakia Smith, Ellington Weldon and substitute Shakai Crockwell sank the West.

The selections for this match were the same as for last season's game which was hit by rain in January. Those nominations were honoured as Kentoine Jennings, representing Vasco last season, led the West and Smith the East.

And though the East had six starters who will be involved in the Dudley Eve competition over the holidays and the West five, the match was played with plenty of commitment. Refreshingly, the officials had an afternoon free of abuse and name calling from the fans who appeared to enjoy the contest.

The East took just 11 minutes to forge ahead when Kuma Smith made a short pass to Nakia Smith on the left side of the box and he curled a low shot into the far corner despite the efforts of the diving Jason Smith who got his fingers to the ball.

Kuma Smith almost had a second goal three minutes later when he tried to catch the goalkeeper off his line with a first time header from about 15 yards, but Smith was equal to the task.

The East were creating the better chances as Dwight Warren then fed his North Village team-mate Kevin Jennings with a long pass to the far side, but Jennings blasted well over the bar. Late in the half the West, with Dwight Basden, McLee Smith and Heys Wolffe leading their attack, came more into the match as they pushed for an equaliser before the break.

Wolffe did put the ball in the net in the 42nd minute when he met a cross to the far post but the flag was up for offside.

East coach Kenny Thompson replaced Warren at the half with Nathan Samuels with Clevon Hill coming on for Kuma Smith minutes later. In fact, all the four East substitutes were players who had featured in the earlier Under-21 match.

The West, coached by John Rebello and Herbie Bascome, replaced Sean Smith with Eddie Dowling at the start of the second half while Kenny Mills came on for his PHC team-mate, Otis Steede and Sinclair Gibbons replaced his Vasco clubmate Dwight Basden. Under-21 player Robert Wilson got his second outing of the day, coming on for Corey Dowling early in the second half.

In fading light and with the floodlights now on, the East found the net again in the 51st minute when Neil Robinson's shot was blocked by the diving Smith and Weldon joined his Wolves team-mate on the scoresheet by scoring from the rebound.

Shakai Crockwell, who had earlier scored for the East Under-21s in their victory, came off the bench in the senior match and netted a brilliant third goal with a header from a cross in the 75th minute.

Defeat inevitable, the West tried to at least avoid the shutout as Karl Roberts went close with a long range effort in the closing minutes. Finally, it was Roberts who found the net in the 89th minute when he caught the East defence napping to score with a curling shot into the far corner from 20 yards as Cymande Davis was finally beaten.
