Bermuda suffer second loss
GEORGETOWN, Guyana (Cana) -- Barbados, set up by a four wicket haul from fast bowler Ottis Gibson and a typically belligerent 87 by dashing opener Philo Wallace, defeated Bermuda by five wickets in their second round Zone A Shell/Sandals cricket match at Enmore here on Saturday.
After restricting Bermuda to 216 for nine off their allotted 50 overs, Barbados easily achieved their target with 26 balls to spare, reaching 220 for five to earn their first points of the tournament after losing their first game on Friday to Guyana by seven wickets. Bermuda lost on Friday by just two runs to the Windward Islands.
After Wallace, who struck eight fours and two sixes in his 110-ball knock, was out with the score on 133 for three, middle order batsman Roland Holder lashed a vintage 55, with seven fours off 71 balls.
Holder shared a breezy fourth wicket stand of 65 runs off just 10 overs with Floyd Reifer, who ended on 26 not out, while captain Courtney Browne was unbeaten on 12.
Slow bowler Charlie Marshall, who bowled Wallace and trapped Holder leg before wicket, was Bermuda's most successful bowler with two for 28 off 8.2 overs.
Opener Clay Smith, who top scored in Bermuda's innings with a responsible 69 off 124 balls with six fours and a six, completed a fine all-round match, taking one for 23 off 10 miserly overs.
"We fell down in the bowling department,'' admitted manager Delby Borden who pointed to injuries to Roger Blades and Clevie Wade as hurting the team.
Blades bowled just three overs while Wade, injured while batting, did not bowl at all after going to hospital with a bruised rib.
"We lost Blades early and (Anthony) Braithwaite didn't get on. The next team we select we're looking to go with all three of our spinners. They seem to be having trouble with the spinners.'' Bermuda, who won the toss and batted, recovered from the early losses of captain Albert Steede (six) and Roger Trott, run out for 10.
Steede was given out leg before wicket at the hands of Gibson, who ended with the excellent figures of four for 36 off his 10 overs.
Smith, another Gibson victim, then enterprisingly led the Bermuda revival from 35 for two with his second consecutive half-century, after making 52 in another losing cause against the Windwards on Friday.
The opener received admirable support from Marshall, who made 29, as the pair fluently added 86 runs for the third wicket.
Marshall, Jeff Richardson (two) and Arnold Manders (six) perished in the space of eight runs, as Bermuda slipped to 129 for five. And when Janeiro Tucker (12) and Smith were removed within two runs of each other, Bermuda were in more trouble at 149 for seven.
Wicketkeeper Dean Minors, with a brisk 36 off just 38 balls, and Clevie Wade, who made 25 retired hurt, carried the total beyond the 200-run mark, adding a vital 61 runs for the eighth wicket.
In reply, Barbados were off to a rousing start, with Wallace dominating an opening stand of 69 with struggling West Indies' opener Sherwin Campbell, who made just five before he was caught behind off Smith.
Wallace took centre stage, flaying wayward Barbados-born fast bowler Anthony Braithwaite, who conceded 49 runs off five overs for the lone wicket of Ryan Hurley (0) towards the end of the game.
Tucker was also expensive, going for 54 runs in his nine overs, while Manders' 10 overs cost 47 runs.
