Bluebirds make winning start to title defence

Two-time defending CellOne Elite City League champions Bluebirds got their title defence off to a winning start before a modest crowd at Somersfield Academy at the weekend.Led by a team high 15 points from Anthony (Mugzy) Furbert, Bluebirds cruised to a comfortable 40-27 win against expansion team Trinity Sound Lions."It’s a work in progress and there is plenty of season left,” said philosophical Lions owner Lynwood Richardson after watching his team play second fiddle against the reigning league champs.Reggie Tolosa also had 15 points in a losing cause for Lions.Saturday’s remaining game saw Fort Knox Panthers outscore Robin Hood Warriors 65-45.Sharp shooter Kevin Stevens poured in 23 points and Ronnie Beuchler added 15 for the Panthers who led 39-17 at the half and never looked back.Naturally, Panthers coach Cecil Hendrickson was delighted to see his team get the new season off on a winning note."It was a great start to the season with a win and we will be looking to keep playing well and improving week by week,” he said.Though trailing heavily at the half Warriors mounted a comeback with Jason Lowe and Kellen Beckham combining for 22 points when play resumed. But in the end it wasn’t to be as the Lions defence could not prevent Panthers from scoring at the opposite end of the court.CellOne Elite City League basketball continues Wednesday at Somersfield Academy.Panthers will look to extend their winning streak when they come up against Storm in the opening game which tips off at 6.30pm while the remaining contest will see Lions take on Warriors at 7.45pm.
