Dominant Lady Bluebirds show who’s who
Young Men’s Social Club Lady Bluebirds retained their Who’s Who Tournament title at Bernard Park at the weekend.
Lady Bluebirds beat a pair of club stablemates, Blazzin Bluebirds 16-5 and Bluebirds Too 18-4, in their final two round-robin fixtures to finish the tournament unbeaten.
Ebonie Burgess, the Lady Bluebirds defender, expressed delight over her team successful title defence.
“We go out every weekend trying to win, so it is always good to win a tournament and to retain your trophy from last year is a plus,” she said. “We are definitely pleased with the way we have started off the season.”
The Who’s Who Tournament involves players on opposing teams drawing for positions to level the playing field.
“The coach chooses the seven players to go out and they chose from a bag what positions they are going to play,” said Burgess, who attributes her team’s success to their adaptability.
“We usually do well in this tournament because we have a very versatile team. That helps a lot when you have players that are familiar with all seven positions on the court.”
Burgess, who played at both ends of the court at the weekend, also cites her group’s positive attitude. “We just go out and have fun,” she said. “Once you are having fun, it makes it a lot easier to do well.”
Signworx Netts finished runners-up behind Lady Bluebirds, with Warwick Workman’s Club Panthers rounding off the top three teams.
Having now claimed their first piece of silverware for the season, Lady Bluebirds will turn their focus on reclaiming the Senior Winter League championship that they surrendered to Data Tech Netts last season. Netts disbanded during the off-season.
Lady Bluebirds, who are unbeaten, are due to face Signworx Netts when league play resumes on Saturday.
Even though Lady Bluebirds are favourites to win the championship, Burgess and her team-mates are taking no chances. “We are not going to take anybody for granted,” she said.
“I know Coach [Erika Russell] is going to put her strongest seven available, no matter who we are playing, and expects for us to go out and do the job.”
