More to come from Bluebirds, says Raynor

Danielle Raynor, the Lady Bluebirds goal shooter, has urged her teammates to build upon their inspiring victory over a rejuvenated Pink Panthers in their previous outing.

Lady Bluebirds were forced to pull out all the stops at Bernard Park last weekend before prevailing 49-44 in an evenly contested Senior Winter League contest on court one.

Raynor, daughter of late cricket legend Sheridan Raynor, led her team’s charge with 30 goals while goal attack Ebonie Burgess added 19.

The win saw Lady Bluebirds avenge their defeat to Panthers during this season’s Sylvia Eastley Tournament and, perhaps more importantly, left them three points clear at the top of the table.

Raynor said: “The first half the season hasn’t finished yet, but with Panthers having also been undefeated up until last Saturday, the victory was very big in terms of the championship.

“We are now on top of the league and will be doing our best to stay there.”

Key to Lady Bluebirds’ triumph over Panthers was their ability to execute the game plan, capitalise on turnovers and make their shots count.

“It was a close match so there wasn’t much room for error,” added Raynor. “We went in with set goals and a team strategy and they proved successful.”

Even though Lady Bluebirds are among the favourites to win the league title, Raynor and her teammates are not taking anything for granted.

“No team will be taken for granted, especially with the increase of new players joining the league,” she said.

“Various players have migrated to different teams, making them each more competitive and versatile.”

Lady Bluebirds are the only remaining unbeaten side in the six-team Senior Winter League after three rounds.

Tomorrow will see the league leaders take on fifth placed Robin Hood Tigers on court one (5pm).

Second placed Panthers will look to get back to winning ways when they face bottom team Bluebirds Too on court two (5pm), with third placed Signworx Netts and fourth placed Blazzin Bluebirds doing battle on court one (6:15pm) in the third and final match.

Tigers and Bluebirds Too have yet to earn a point this term.
