American Mitchell claims maiden title

Jordan Mitchell came from three shots back to capture a maiden Bacardi Par 3 World Championship title at Turtle Hill Golf Club yesterday. The American won the 36-hole event by a single shot after firing a one-under-par 53 that included three birdies and two bogeys in heavy downpours that made his task all the more daunting. The 2011 Bermuda Open winner clung to a one-shot lead heading to the final hole but nearly threw it away when his nine iron tee shot sailed over the flag and landed in a greenside bunker. However, Mitchell’s short game shone through when it mattered most as he got up and down to save par and clinch a maiden Bacardi Par 3 title at the first attempt.“I had a great bunker shot and I’m glad it went as close as it (nine inches) did because I didn’t really want to have a three or four footer to win the tournament,” Mitchell said. “That bunker shot is probably the best I’ve hit in a very long time under pressure.“It was neck and neck and pretty close throughout the day but luckily I made two birdies on ten and 12 which really helped my momentum.”Mitchell, who pocketed $5,000 for his efforts, finished with a two-round total of one- under- par- 107 that lowered the tournament record by three shots. He shot an even par 54 in the first round.Finishing second was American Joe Horowitz (108) who finished the tournament at even par along with Canadians Bill Walsh and Kirk Hanefeld who placed third and fourth respectively.Horowitz shot yesterday’s lowest round of two -under-par 52 that included five birdies and three bogeys. He was four under par for the round after 14 holes before bogeys at 14 and 17 put a dent in his championship hopes.“This is a tough, little golf course,” Horowitz said. “There’s no real gimme holes.”Hanefeld fired a record low three -under- par 51 during the first round to grab a share of the lead with fellow Canadian Ian Doig (111) who also came in a three under for the round.Diog fell out of the thick of contention, though, after carding a six-over-par 60 yesterday.Port Royal head pro Dwayne Pearman (110) topped the local pros and was sixth overall.Bermuda’s Ebonie Burgess (121) won the ladies division by two shots over nearest rival Katrin Burnie (123) who finished runner up at this event for the second straight year.Burgess, who also won the Bacardi Par 3 Championship in 2011, carded a eight-over-par 62 yesterday that included eight bogeys.“I came here to try and win and I did so I’m happy about that,” she said.Bermuda’s Jevon Roberts (119) extended his current hot streak after overcoming a six shot deficit to win the amateur division by two shots over nearest rival Ernest Koury (121).It was the Port Royal player’s second title inside of a week after conquering the amateur field at last week’s Bermuda Open.“It’s really been a fantastic week,” said Roberts, who carded a two -over- par 56 yesterday that included one birdie and three bogeys. “I knew I could shoot a good number and hopefully just give myself a chance.”Bermudian Craig Christensen (119), who equalled yesterday’s lowest round of two-under-par 52, won the senior title at the first attempt by a single shot over defending champion Hav Trott (120).“Two under is my best score up here and to do it in a big tournament is an absolute thrill for me,” said Christensen, whose final round contained six birdies and four bogeys.
